5 sustainable swimwear brands to shop at in Hong Kong

Planning a trip to the pool or beach? Or is there a classic Hong Kong junk trip on your calendar? Before you do, why not invest in swimwear essentials from sustainable brands that prioritise environmentally friendly practices?

We’ve rounded up five such brands that are making a positive impact on the planet, whether that is by using recycled fabrics or donating a part of their sales proceeds to ocean protection charities. The best part? The serve up a variety of styles and are all available online and deliver to Hong Kong.

Sustainability-focused Hong Kong-based fashion brand Vipop has just launched its latest collection of swimwear titled Sol 23, which is inspired by the colours of Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The brand makes swimsuits out of 100 per cent recycled polyester, while its beachwear and cover-ups are created from threads made out of recycled plastic bottles. Available in eye-catching shades of red, green and hot pink, this collection lets you channel your Caribbean queen.

From the fabric to the tag, Milan-based beachwear brand Masarà takes the environment into account for each element of its swimwear. All swimsuits are made using Econyl, a kind of regenerated nylon, and the tags are made out of Alga Carta paper, which are created from the excess algae in Venice’s waters. The brand’s latest collection comes in pastel shades such as Cherry Blossom Pink and muted shades such as Chocolate Brown that will suit a range of skin tones. Another highlight is the Bandau top that can also be worn as a bandana.

Slo Active, a size-inclusive swimwear and activewear brand, that stocks sizes up to 5XL, is also heavily focused on eco-friendliness. Its garments are made from plant-based spandex, and the brand donates a portion of all its sales proceeds to Earth to Ocean, a charity that works to protect oceans.

The brand’s latest drops include high-neck one-pieces, bandeau bikinis, fuller-coverage bottoms, as well as multi-purpose shorts and leggings that are great for both water and land sports.

Korean-born, London-based designer Rejina Pyo is best known for her collections that often create buzz at London Fashion Week with her fresh yet feminine take on womenswear. In 2021, she released her first swimwear pieces made from recycled nylon fabrics to reduce waste and reliance on virgin materials. Her newest 2023 collection features asymmetrical one-pieces, bikini tops and briefs in warm shades of rust and mustard, as well as a bright pop of coral.

Bikini Bible, founded by Lauren Hunt in 2020, create pieces that are made from Econyl and ghost fishing nets. The latest Paradiso collection was inspired by the tropical colour palette and sandy beaches of Jamaica, and offers a variety of bikinis and one pieces in shades of ocean blue and jungle green.
